SAN FRANCISCO

A San Francisco company has come up with a new parking venture to save customers headaches and money.

May 6, 2015

Haloplate is a free service that sends text messages to vehicle owners about an impending tow or any other problem with their parked car. To get the alerts customers can register their vehicle, make, model and license plate.

Once registered, if someone notices a car being burglarized or the lights left on in a vehicle they can go to Haloplate.com, type in the license plate and send the car’s owner a text message. A property owner can also register and let drivers know if they’re blocking their driveway, before they call a tow truck.

“We’ve essentially turned the vehicle’s license plate into the vehicle’s telephone number,” said Haloplate founder and CEO, Ed Lynch.

Lynch told KTVU the service is secure and that no personal information is required to sign up.

“The key thing is that everybody’s anonymous, the common denominator is the vehicle itself,” Lynch said. “When somebody messages that plate, that’s associated with your cell phone number and only you receive that message notification.  When you reply it doesn’t give your name. It just says that your vehicle is responding.”

The service is expanding nationwide with hotel chains, stadiums and other event venues looking to get on board.

Instead of leaving a written note on a vehicle’s windshield, a text message is sent to the owners who’ve exceeded the time allotted to park or other issue with the car, including if it was involved in an accident.

Haloplate officials say users caught abusing the service by sending unwanted messages will be suspended and if the behavior continues, they’ll ultimately be deleted from the system.
